Last week a man was arrested at Kohl's department store after being detained by a manager. Police say the man is being charged with retail theft, obstructing an officer and felony bail jumping. He is accused of stealing a vest, a T-shirt and a pair of jeans.

These charges are very serious and since the man was out on felony bail, it is likely the courts not be as lenient if he is convicted. The 18-year old Milwaukee man will need a rigorous defense against the theft charges. It is important that, although he was out on bail, his rights aren't violated throughout the investigation and legal process.

There are rules that investigators and authorities must follow during the course of the investigation into any crime. The rules are in place to prevent abuse of power or unfair punishment for those accused.

Sometimes the public opinion of a person can also adversely affect the way they are treated. It is important to remember that many new stories regarding crimes only have one source, the police report. These reports are designed to present the point of view of the police, and not the person who is arrested. Police reports don't give the accused a forum to reply to their accusations.

When news of a crime is printed and investigators don't consider the story of the accused, it is important to form a solid criminal defense. Those accused of theft could learn about their rights from speaking with a criminal defense attorney.
