With the widespread use of credit and debit cards, cases of identity theft will continue to be a problem across the country. A Milwaukee woman was arrested in October and made her first court appearance this week on for 6 counts of identity theft. Authorities allege the woman stole a credit card from a priest and used it to purchase gas and gift cards.
The woman could face years in prison and a large fine if she is convicted. Because of the severity of these crimes, the woman will likely need a solid criminal defense. She was arrested after police say they recognized her picture from a surveillance photo.
Authorities say the Milwaukee woman was part of a four person identity theft ring. It is unclear whether anyone else is being charged or what part the other people had in the alleged identity theft ring.
The accusation of being involved in identity theft is very serious and should be rigorously defended. If someone is charged with a crime, they might be wise to contact a criminal defense attorney. An attorney can make sure the person is treated fairly by the courts and make sure their rights are preserved. They can conduct their own investigation to determine how evidence was collected and that everything was done legally. Illegally obtained evidence usually cannot be used in court. The attorney can also help you decide what information you might want to give authorities, and what information you don't have to provide to them. It is up to the authorities and prosecutors to present evidence to convict a person.
